Ever had a day where the cake lying in the refrigerator seemed like the only solution for your bad mood? Whether somebody made you upset, or you had a bad day at work, or you fought with your spouse, you’re sure that the only consolation is lying in the fridge.

Many of us find their consolation for all of the above in food.  Food has a compensating role in our life. So how can you get through those moments of crisis without blowing up and drowning your sorrow in food?

It’s important to keep in mind that, as the weight comes off, you’ll learn that food and sweets are not worth the burden they create.  Nothing can be solved by eating chocolate, and eating it when feeling angry or disappointed will only result in added frustration for damaging the diet process that was so important to you.

How to stay strong against temptations in moments of crisis

1. Be in touch with yourself. If you’re feeling down, don’t let yourself be taken over by food.  Right before you take the first bite go to the nearest mirror and ask yourself – is it worth it

2. Prepare your meals and food ahead of time.  Many people break due to lack in planning.  “I don’t have the strength to cook and prepare, I’ll grab something on the way,” is a very common mistake.  You might find yourself regretting not spending 10 minutes in the morning making food for the rest of the day.

3. Sometimes the solution for a crisis is a workout.  A workout in most cases will improve your feeling.  Sometimes you’ll find yourself arriving at the gym tired, angry, and frustrated but coming out smiling and happy – and that is a great feeling

4. Exercise your brain.  Instead of turning to food, try to stop for a second and find the solution to the problem which is causing your bleak mood, since you know food won’t solve the situation.

5. Sick of maintaining – feel like un-restraining

Many people reach moments of crisis after a long (or short) process of weight loss. The moments of crisis divide into two kinds:

1. People lose weight nicely and suddenly their weight loss gets stuck and a feeling of despair starts to rise.  Many people don’t understand that their body isn’t a machine and it sometimes gets stuck without a reason.  So if you eat right, exercise, and the weight still won’t budge, the keyword for success is patience.  When you feel down, think about the alternative – giving up and gaining all that you lost.  Hold on to your resolve to go all the way and fight to reach your goal weight.

2. Another moment of crisis will arise when you start getting compliments.  Suddenly you’ll find yourself allowing yourself more food and more treats.  It’s very nice to leave a store with a smaller size pair of jeans and celebrate your purchase in a nearby pizza place, since you’ve lost weight; it’s allowed. Many people don’t understand that being in control and preparing ahead is the key for success in this not-so-easy process.  Sometimes it’s easy to forget how hard we worked to get into that pair of tight jeans or that dust-covered dress that’s been waiting patiently in your closet.

So before you attack the refrigerator, call the Chinese delivery guy, or walk into the nearest bakery, think twice if  food will actually solve your problems, and if that  slice of pizza is indeed  appropriate compensation.
