Hi, rkollars. It may be the iron, and it is a good idea to have that checked out by a health care provider. There is something called an anemia panel, which looks at your blood cells as well as your body’s levels of iron, ferritin, transferrin, and “total iron-binding capacity”.
If your levels are normal, it may just be something primal, such as the taste of bood. Red meat is considered to be addictive in ways similar to chocolate, cigarettes, alcohol, etc. because of that.
Going back to the nutritional benefits, red meat is high in iron, B-vitamins, minerals such as zinc, and high-quality protein. If you can find organic pastured beef, it also has high levels of vitamin E and good fats.

I find that I need to eat about 6-8 ounces of red meat (like a nice med rare or rare lean beef steak – still a little bloody/red) at least once a week or I get tired, drowsy, lethargic, a little depressed. Often, within an hour after having red meat, my energy level, alertness, mental capacity, etc. increases and seems to sustain for 5-7 days. My mother and grandmother used to say that red meat contains iron. I’m wondering if during any given week I tend to have low levels of iron. Can someone tell me what is in red meat that might stimulate this in my body. I have no problem eating a little lean red meat every week, so I don’t feel like I need to replace it, but wondering what the nutritional benefits might be.
