Hi, Tom. To make these healthier, I would suggest the following:
-instead of the orange juice, puree the sections from 1 orange
-instead of the dry skim milk, add 1 cup low-fat milk, preferably pastured
-instead of canola oil, nut oil or olive ol
-honey should be pure, preferably organic raw
-instead of brown sugar, whole raw or coconut sugar
-eggs should be organic omega-3 or pastured
-flour should preferably be sprouted or 100% whole spelt or wheat
-baking powder should be aluminum-free
-oats should be whole steel-cut
-emphasize that flaxseeds should be whole, then ground just before use.

The following recipe is from Zonya. I like these a lot based on their tangy orange flavor and they aren’t too sweet. Rather than grab a meal replacement bar for a snack, I prefer these.

Are there any recommend tweaks to make these healthier. I know canola oil, orange juice and brown sugar are not welcome with this program. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

These are baked, just like cookies.
1 cup oat bran (dry, uncooked)
3/4 cup orange juice
1 cup + 1 T applesauce, unsweetened
2 T canola oil
1 cup honey
1/3 cup fi rmly packed brown sugar
3 lg eggs
1½ T vanilla extract
1 T grated orange rind or 2 tsp
orange extract
3 cups whole-wheat pastry fl our*
1 T baking powder
1½ tsp baking soda
1 cup nonfat dry milk
2½ cups oats (quick-cooking or old-fashioned)
1 cup nuts
1 cup raisins
1 cup ground fl ax seed (opt)

Thanks,
Tom
