Monounsaturated fatty acids, as in olive oil, canola oil, avocado, and nuts are actually best for vitamin D absorption, and are good for you by themselves (be sure to get the canola organic, though). The fats in dairy aren’t quite as beneficial, so perhaps go 1-1.5% fat for dairy, and have another source of fat with it.

I read the article on the “10 Diet Myths” today and had a question regarding myth #4. It basically read that in order to obtain Vitamin D from dairy products, you need to consume at least 3% fat content from that particular dairy food in order for the calcium to be absorbed in the body. My choices for dairy have been the nonfat yogurt and lowest fat cottage cheese or ricotta. Is it better for me to choose a 3% fat content one instead? I thought I was doing good in choosing the lowest in order to obtain a better score on my menu choices and, of course, to lose weight quicker. Help on this please. Thank you. KD
