I am on diuretic 2 times a day that are potassium depleting. I take potassium 2 times a day. My dry weight has gone up because I have developed an increase in my appetite. Prior to rhis I was carrying so much extra fluid everywhere I did not have an appetite and could not eat much because of the fullness I felt. After being in the hospital for 4 days I lost 25lbs of fluid and now I feel great and I want to stay that away.

Hi, sdyck67. If you stick to whole, unprocessed foods (including selecting the lighter blue items in the Menu Planner lists to build your menus) and avoid high-sodium seasonings, you’ll be fine. When you cook, do take advantage of seasonings, as they not only mask a lack of salt (which helps, if you’re not used to that) but are also very healthy. Are you taking diuretics? If so, do check with your prescribing doctor if they are potassium-sparing or potassium-depleting. If it is the latter, it may be advised to take potassium to protect your health.
With regard to your weight gain, just to be clear – are you suspecting that it is fluid or dry weight that you have gained?

I need help, help, help! Recent diagnosis of diastolic congestive heart failure at 59 yrs old. I need to learn how to decease my sodium intake to 1.5-2.0 grams per day to help keep the fluid retention that occurs with CHF. This help includes shopping and reduceing sodium in all of my foods and meals I prepare for all of my family instead of preparing to separate meals. I an read the labels for sodium but terrible in preparing the right foods, with the limited sodium and getting my weight down. Instead of losing weight with this new diet change I am faint weight. Please help!
