Hi, louannasbury. It depends on the food and the system. First, all liquids are measured by volume. Solids in US measurements are by volume as well, with the exception of meats, meat substitutes, yellow cheeses, and nuts, which are by weight. In metric measurements, all solids are by weight.

Is food measured by volume or weight? Does 1/2 cup pasta mean 4 oz. in weight or 1/2 of a measuring cup? There is a big difference!
